The first set of images shows the Perron and Warren family of their black-and-white family photos. A newspaper called the "Connecticut Daily Campus" with a subheading of. Title Research: The Shining

Image
What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? It first shows the title "A Stanley Kubrick Film." After this, it shows the names of the cast such as Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duval and is followed up with the title the "Shining." The titles are in call caps with a san serif font and a bright cyan color. It then shows additional cast members in the movie.  What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? It seems to show the Pacific Northwest region in America: bodies of water, forest, mountains, and greenery. There's also a camera tracking a car on the road in the middle of a forest and the mountains. At the very end, it shows a large building in the middle of the mountains that seems to be isolated. What connotations do these images carry? These images seem to establish the setting in which the characters are in. With the driving car in the road, it suggest someone is traveling or taking a trip somewhere out of a city or town, since this isn't

Title Research: Insidious

Image
What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? Film District, Alliance is a title that is seen, which I'm assuming is the producing companies collaborating for the making of the movie. It also says "Film District Presents",  in the opening credits. And says "A James Wan Film" which I'm assuming is the director of the movie.  What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? There's lamp that is first introduced in opening sequence. And the camera pans from a little boy sleeping on the bed, a lava lamp, a single-lit candle, and then to the title of the movie, "Insidious" in all caps in red letters. After showing the title it shows the credits of the cast members and black-and-white images of the interior and exteriors of a house. These black-and-white images shows a bird-eye view of a staircase, low angles showing a door to a bedroom, windows, dining room, etc with low-key lighting. What connotations do these images carry? These imag

Title Research: Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark

Image
What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? It first shows the title of the movie, "Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark." And is followed up with credits of who has done the screenplay, screenstory, production, basically whoever worked on the film. Also shows that the movies is "Based on the Series by Alvin Schwartz." What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? There seem to be some animation and watercolor effects in the title sequence of the film. It's seen there's some silhouettes of trees, forests, skulls throughout. Also, they've achieved the watercolor effect by making a bright red color seem to bleed or blend with a pitch black color.  What connotations do these images carry? The bright red color evidently associate with the visual of blood, and this association is strengthened from the watercolor effect in which the bright red is pooling in black ink. Also, the imagery of forests and skulls are typically associated with death

Title Research: Watch the Titles Website

Image
Another website I was researching regarding titles is 'Watch the Titles!' From this website, I saw the processes in making a title sequences and the time constraints behind it. When creating title sequences, the designer and artist typically weed out the storyline, theme, objectives, and characters in their creative processes. This enables them to work with a guide or map out how the title sequences will materialize on screen. In times of time constraint creators will collaborate and generate as much ideas as possible to the playing field and work from there. I learned that title sequences in the making isn't necessarily a linear process. Ideas are constantly juggled upon, contemplated, or straight up thrown away. Their ideas will be sketched over and over again, when it comes to fonts, how character will look, etc. It seems that title sequences have the same calculated nature as film-making, and its proven to be just as important. The primary goal of title sequences is to

Title Research: Art of the Title Website

Image
In this research, I was looking at the website called the 'Art of the Title.'  The purpose of this research is to see the importance of title design and title sequences.  I've watch some popular title sequences that gained recognition for its visuals. Upon seeing many videos of title sequences I've come to some conclusions. I learned how fonts in title design could drastically change the mood and feeling regarding a film. With this, I realized that title design involves deliberate processes: designers constantly think how thick, how curved, how sharp, how soft the letters will look. These designs will ultimately dictate how the rhetoric will be established for a film. Also, title sequences are crucial as well. Not only does it establish tone, but it's essentially the 'hook' of the film, and keep audiences interested in what they're seeing. They also can introduce visual clues of the storyline, the characters in the film, and the theme of the story. Title

Genre Research: A Quiet Place

Image
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? I liked the use of ambient diegetic sounds in this film. It gives an added level of suspense and anxiety surrounding the character. The character's purpose is to not talk at all, as there's monstrous aliens that hunts people bas on sound. However, the ambient sound also just gives a sense of suspense, since the silence can feel like a detrimental experience to viewers. As the viewer is deprived of speaking, an essential tool for most humans, the viewing experience can feel more anxious. As an audience member my sight of seeing and hearing feels more heightened as I'm relying on the character's expressions and visual & auditory puzzles to fins out what's happening in the scene. I would like to replicate this kind of viewing experience to the audience, as they'll be more attentive to visual details.  What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like? I liked

Genre Research: The Ring

Image
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? The type of lighting and low-key lighting in this film is something I would like to take inspiration from for my final task. Particularly the colors throughout the film, it has monochromatic blue-green uniform tone that gives off a sense of a cold, eerie, and ominous tone. Just even looking at screenshots of the film alongside with the low-key lighting, I already feel already on edge and anxious looking at the tills of the film. With this type of coloring, the storyline feels more exponentially mysterious and utterly terrifying to watch. What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like? I liked how the antagonist's form of pouncing on it victims. With an added sci-fi aspect, the antagonists, Samara, could materialize from a digital screen to the real world. With such a unique entrance, it was terrifying as a viewer to see that a villain could appear to the real world out of nowhe

Genre Research: The Shining

Image
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? The elements I chose to incorporate in my final task is the non-diegetic shrill stings in the background of the Shining. It gives off a feeling of suspense and anxiety throughout the film, which is the effect I would like to recreate as well. I would also like to recreate the same feeling I had watched throughout the movie. It may be subjective, but I empathizes greatly with the anxieties and fears of Wendy (one of the main characters). I would love to reincorporate that same feeling for my opening sequence, basically have my audience absorb the anxieties of the character like a sponge.  What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like? I was immersed by the acting throughout the film of the movie, as it effectively elicited a chilling fear to the audience. Jack Nicholson's and Shelly Duvall's performances of the two main characters eerily feel too real, and it's grabs the

Genre Research: Deciding To Do the Horror Genre

Image
I decided to pick the horror genre to execute my pitch:  A girl in quarantine working on a last minute assignment suddenly drifts to sleep and experiences a nightmare.  Based on the research for multiple genres, I ultimately wanted to do the horror genre as it fits my creative vision for this opening sequence. Many elements of horror, the anxiety and ominous tones, is something I would like to recreate in my film. From my research, I don't think I can really capture the essence of a thriller or a comedy given my lack of vision to execute their elements into the opening sequence of my film.  For the opening sequence of my film, I wanted to capture the anxiety of doing a last minute assignment, and create metaphors in which the character is presented when dreaming. For example, I imagine a scene in where the character is in the middle of the nightmare, and gets attacked or even killed by a person, who can represent dwindling time. The anxiety surrounding time and how it can effect yo

Genre Research: Horror

Horror Horror - a film genre that elicits fear to an audience for entertainment Common Camera Angles and Shots High angles:  establishes vulnerability and a weak characterization. In horror films, this is specially evident in the protagonist that is harmed by the villain of the story. Low angles:  used when portraying the villain, establishing a sense of power and intimidation. Close-up Shots  of the actor's expression; typically scared or have a sinister expression Over-the-Shoulder Shots:  tens to reveal the antagonist with this shot  POV Shots: Enables the audience to either see the victim or the villain's perspective with this shot. When in the victim's perspective, the villain is usually charging at them. When in the villain's perspective, the victim is cowering or running from them.  Common Camera Movements Pans: Typically in POV shots where it shows the character contemplating what direction to go next Tracking: Typically done when character is running away, w

Genre Research: Comedy

For the start of my final task, I'm researching various genres in order to decide what genre I will assign my short film to be. From the beginning of the year, way before even starting this project, I researched the genre of comedy. In this powerpoint slide, I complied common conventions that tend to appear in comedy films. The following conventions includes camera movements, lighting, editing, transitions, sounds, mise en scene, etc.  Additionally, I researched the prime elements, examples of film, and my likes & dislikes regarding the genre of comedy. I will also be studying 2 additional genres for my final task to broaden my scope of vision of what my short film will be. The purpose of this research is to see what my following options are to execute my creative vision for my final task, and use it as a guideline to effectively convey the tone and rhetoric pertaining to the genre I will pick.

My Pitch

Image
Pitch One:  A receptionist from heaven on her first job receives phone call from God saying he needs a bounty hunter to capture someone from the underworld, who breached heaven's security system. Pitch Two:  A girl in quarantine working on a last minute assignment suddenly drifts to sleep and experiences a nightmare.  Regarding the two pitches, I will have to chose pitch two for starting my final task. My main concerns for the film is complication in the audio. Pitch one may have more complications in the filming and post-editing process than in pitch two. In pitch one, there's many diegetic sounds that wouldn't be picked up on my microphone, otherwise it just be of poor quality. For example, in pitch one, there will be a phone call; the ringing of the telephone will need to be added in the post editing process, and I don't have a telephone that would produce a sound that will be picked up on the mic. In the editing process, I will have to add a stock phone sound. Also,

Starting the Final Task

Image
Hello! If you'd forgotten already, my name is Mariel Ilagan. It's been while since I've last filmed, but now, I'm ready to get back on track to create. As of now, I'm starting the final project for this class! I'm ecstatic for what's coming in the future in my endeavor for making the start of a short film or movie. I have many ideas for this short clip of a movie that I'm creating, and I'm excited to see how it will materialize or unravel.  For this project, I'm going to be working alone doing this final task. I've chosen to work by myself, as I feel that I have more autonomy over my schedule and the work itself. I feel that I would have more control in this project if I work by myself, and I will able to reach many potentials or milestones if I work alone.
