Genre Research: The Shining
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?
The elements I chose to incorporate in my final task is the non-diegetic shrill stings in the background of the Shining. It gives off a feeling of suspense and anxiety throughout the film, which is the effect I would like to recreate as well. I would also like to recreate the same feeling I had watched throughout the movie. It may be subjective, but I empathizes greatly with the anxieties and fears of Wendy (one of the main characters). I would love to reincorporate that same feeling for my opening sequence, basically have my audience absorb the anxieties of the character like a sponge.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?
I was immersed by the acting throughout the film of the movie, as it effectively elicited a chilling fear to the audience. Jack Nicholson's and Shelly Duvall's performances of the two main characters eerily feel too real, and it's grabs the audience's attention immediately. Jack's acting was borderline psychotic, and Shelly's acting reflected sheer terror. As an audience member, I feel the same sentiment for Wendy, played by Shelly Duvall, with her heightened fear of her crazy husband, Jack. It felt bone-chilling to watch, as I felt I was feeling the same sense of terror that Wendy felt for Jack.
Additionally, I enjoyed cinematography throughout the movie, especially ones with Danny, the two main character's child, was experiencing graphic hallucinations or visions. Especially in the scene with the elevator pooling with blood, or when he encounters these dead strange twin girls when he was riding his bike down hall. These visions were terrifying to see, as it was seen by a child. Children are supposed to be innocent and happy; however, Danny experiences blood-curdling visions that could be traumatic to someone as young as him.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
There were very few things that I didn't like about the movie. Some of those things could actually be wha makes the Shining so iconic, so this is a preferential take. Sometimes I did occasionally get bored with some of the dialogue throughout the movie; I personally like to see metaphoric visual images throughout films, so dialogue could be somewhat boring to watch. However, the dialogue does reveal a lot about the character, and I've learned a lot about Jack's characterization through his talking in the movie.
