Genre Research: The Ring
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?
The type of lighting and low-key lighting in this film is something I would like to take inspiration from for my final task. Particularly the colors throughout the film, it has monochromatic blue-green uniform tone that gives off a sense of a cold, eerie, and ominous tone. Just even looking at screenshots of the film alongside with the low-key lighting, I already feel already on edge and anxious looking at the tills of the film. With this type of coloring, the storyline feels more exponentially mysterious and utterly terrifying to watch.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?
I liked how the antagonist's form of pouncing on it victims. With an added sci-fi aspect, the antagonists, Samara, could materialize from a digital screen to the real world. With such a unique entrance, it was terrifying as a viewer to see that a villain could appear to the real world out of nowhere and at the least unexpected times. This form of 'power' of Samara elevates the anxious and suspenseful element to the horror genre.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
Some of the elements I didn't like about the film, which is common in horror films, was the lack of strength and willpower of the characters. For example, one character named Noah Clay encountered Samara coming out of the screen and materialized into the real world. His physical reaction is what frustrated me the most. He didn't even run, he was crawling slowly as if his life wasn't on the line. All he seemed to be doing was staring at Samara, and he didn't even attempt sprint out of the building. This was the most frustrating experience as an audience member, as he could've easily avoided Samar, since she was very slow in her pace.
