Research Blog: Music Video

Aerial East is an indie artist. Indie music is now becoming a trend in social media, which now formed a distinct aesthetic, ever since the genre was popularized by the younger generation, such as Generation Z, which is my age. When I think of the indie aesthetic, I think of bright colors, eclectic 80s-2000s inspired fashion, skating, and individuality. These aspects of the indie aesthetic is also demonstrated in indie music videos. I searched other music artists that fell into the same category in the diverse genre of indie music. These are the conventions that I found from a good number of indie artists:

  • Costumes: The costumes in indie music videos are typically reminiscent of the 80s-2000s style. These clothes tend to be very colorful, consisting of primary colors. There are puffy jackets, mom jeans, beanies, crop tops, graphic tees, big hoodies, button up shirts, sweatshirts, etc. Majority of these clothing items are fitted to be oversized or baggy. These are some distinct clothing items commonly seen in indie music videos. Their clothes represent naturalistic aspects, therefore relating to real people, which appeals to the younger generations.

  • Props: These music video typically have cars, bikes, instruments (guitars, drums, piano, etc.), skateboards, and vegetation.
The Big Moon- Your Light
BETWEEN FRIENDS- blushing

  • Setting: Indie music videos tend to take place outside. Specifically in suburban neighborhoods, skateparks, streets, anything with greenery or vegetation, park and by a body of water or ocean. If settings occurred inside, it would typically consist of the character's homes and bedrooms. Majority of the settings in indie music videos are very naturalistic, representing conventions in reality. These settings can relate to the target audience of indie music listeners, such as young people within my age range.

Boy Pablo- hey girl
Clairo- Heaven
  • Camera and Camera Movement: While searching for a bunch of indie music videos, I noticed that they sometimes cameras or filters that gives an 'old look' to the video. They may be achieved through a VHS camera, film camera, and super 8 camera. Or it can also be achieved with a filters in the post-editing process.

  • Colors: In more recent indie music videos, the colors present in them tend to showcase vibrant colorful scenes. The colors seems to be contrasting or stand out throughout indie music videos.

MONSUNE- OUTTA MY MIND
Rex Orange County- Loving is Easy
  • Fonts: In the start of these videos, there's always text containing the artist name or the song. These fonts are usually colorful, clean, contrasting, and easy to read for the audience.
